In the summer of 2002, faculty in the School of Education at the University of Colorado-Boulder (CU) initiated a reform of the doctoral program in education research. The need for reform was accepted by the whole faculty (n = 32) but undertaken by a 10-person committee representing the five doctoral degree programs offered: Educational Foundations, Educational Psychology, Educational Equity and Cultural Diversity, Instruction and Curriculum, and Research and Evaluation. This article tells the story of the efforts to reform the program: What they were trying to do, how they are going about it, and why.
