IL: Chicago considers using transit passes to track students

New CTA fare cards able to track students

Chicago Tribune April 11, 2008

A new CTA fare card for Chicago Public School students could give the district the ability to track the students' use of the transit system by recording the name, time and bus or train number each time the card is used. CTA and Chicago Public School officials say that the all-in-one ID card and transit cards are meant to ease travel for students and cut down on fraud. In light of objections concerning privacy rights, Chicago Public Schools officials say that the district is still investigating what use it can legally make of the tracking data.
