DPS teachers union seeks intervention

The Denver Public Schools' "ProComp" merit-based teacher compensation system is witnessing lower participation rates than anticipated. Superintendent Michael Bennett believes that this is due to inadequate starting salaries and incentives, and proposes to increase starting salaries by $9,000 to a state high of $44,000, and increase incentives to teach in high poverty schools from $1,000 to $3,000 per year. The Denver Classroom Teachers Association, however, would prefer to act as a mediator betweeen the union and the district as changes to the system are negotiated.
