VA: Summer program for young readers uses paperbacks and postcards

Fairfax schools plug gap with summer reading

The Fairfax County schools are trying to cost-saving program to help young readers who traditionally fall behind in their skills over the summer.  The district is providing books, postcards and stamps to students to encourage them to engage in voluntary reading over the summer.  The students select the books in cooperation with a reading specialist and mail postcards to their teachers about what they are reading.  The program is based on research that had previously been completed in the district.
