Charter institute bill toned down

Two bills concerning charter schools were debated in the Senate Education Committee. The first bill raised controversy with its proposal to extend the ability of the Charter School Institute to approve schools even in districts with sole chartering authority. This clause was amended and the bill sent to the Senate Appropriations committee to review proposed changes including a construction contingency fund and exemption from state purchasing rules.  The second bill creates a pilot program under the Colorado Charter School Institute and will include up to three schools specifically for students with autism.
