Discussion of Research on Poverty and Achievement

NEPC Fellow David Berliner’s work on the effect of poverty-induced problems on student achievement is referenced in today’s Answer Sheet written by Valerie Strauss.  Strauss examines the issues of poverty and school performance and concludes that “the stubborn fact remains that without attacking the roots of poverty, we will never close the stubborn achievement gap. Putting poor kids in middle-class schools will help some of them, and that’s a good thing, but the real answer is alleviating poverty.”  See a link to the blog post and David Berliner’s work here.
