GOP sees proof of foretold raid on extra school funds

Last year, the state enacted a property tax freeze that would not allow tax rates to decrease as property values increase. The money generated by this measure, estimated at $3.8 billion over the next 10 years, was slated for education. However, democrats are proposing to use money freed up by the general fund, due to lower enrollment, for other initiatives, such as health care. Republicans argue that the money should be used for education, as promised, and plan to put the property tax freeze on the ballot in November.
