NCLB to be relaxed for some states

U.S. eases "No Child" law as applied to some states

Margaret Spellings, the Secretary of Education, announced that some provisions of No Child Left Behind would be relaxed for up to 10 states. Some have argued that the law labels too many school districts as in need of improvement, and that this relaxation of the law will provide the chance for states to concentrate reform efforts on seriously underperforming schools. Critics of the plan say that this change does not do enough to transform NCLB and that relief will go to suburban districts with the result that urban districts will be left facing the most serious consequences under the law.  Click here to see a related story in the Los Angeles Times.
