DC: Council considering tighter rules for charter schools

Council members propose tighter rules for program

The DC Council is considering changes to charter school rules, including requiring a 15-month planning period before charter schools can open and adding a residency requirement for appointees to the Public Charter School Board.  The proposed changes come amid rising concern over the effectiveness of charters in DC after only 10 of 55 charter schools made adequate yearly progress under No Child Left Behind.
