Use of public transit to transport students challenged

Clampdown on public buses could jeopardize school ride

Christian Science Monitor  June 13, 2008

The Federal Transportation Administration is beginning to clamp down on public transportation systems that create routes to shuttle children to school.  The FTA claims that the federal money used for public transit systems should not subsidize school busing and thereby harm private bus companies' ability to compete.  Schools dependent on public transit to get students to and from school fear the increase costs that would come from contracting with private bus firms.
