CA: California to require all 8th graders to take algebra test

California mandates testing every eighth-grader in algebra--ready or not

The California Board of Education voted to require all eighth-graders to take a test to measure proficiency in algebra.  The state curriculum guidelines include algebra in the eighth grade, and the change helps the state meet federal guidelines that require that the tests students take be aligned with state requirements.  The Board did not approve a proposal backed by the State Superintendent of Public Instruction which would have created two tests for eighth grade, including one that is easier than the algebra-focused test.
