Initiative trains kindergarteners in "critical languages"

The federal government is providing grants through the National Security Language Initiative to encourage schools to teach children as young as five and six years old languages that are deemed critical to national security. These languages include Chinese, Arabic, Russian, Hindi and Farsi. The program is targeted at young children because of the studies which show that young children can learn foreign languages more quickly.
