CO: Relationships tense between lawmakers and state universities

Fund us or free us, say colleges

Presidents of major universities in Colorado are asking the state legislature to loosen its control over tuition rates, citing that state funds account for only about ten percent of their operating budgets. This request comes at a time when higher education funding is especially vulnerable because the state is needing to make significant budget cuts.   Only recently, the universities balked at the suggestion by one state representative that state universities should privatize, ultimately reaching the point where they receive no state funding.
