NEPC Review: A New Direction for Students in an AI World: Prosper, Prepare, Protect (Brookings Institution, January 2026)

A recent report synthesizes a year-long study of generative AI in education, concluding that its potential harms to young people’s learning and development currently outweigh its benefits. It highlights three priorities: promoting AI aligned with evidence-informed pedagogies, building holistic AI literacy, and advancing trustworthy design and governance. While the report’s breadth is a strength, it does not systematically weigh evidence or clarify who should implement its 12 recommendations, leaving decision makers with broad ideas but limited guidance.
